A New Season

For this new season, I am setting out to work with one chair, to explore elements of design and self-directed study and how I am at play with wants to emerge.

I’ve decided to work with The Cycle of Completion which entails: Intention, Preparation, Action, Follow Through and Integration. It’s an iterative cycle offering much to pay attention to and to hone.

My intention took hold of me as a passing idea that took root. It came in as a question, what if I work with this chair and only this chair for one season? What would that be like?

Then I spoke it aloud to others in Creative Community and as I was speaking I felt it root down, become decision. Then, I got scared, the kind of scared that comes before a challenge.

I began to prepare.

I started writing down my thoughts. I looked at the chair. I listened. I wondered what I would like to do. I made a zine. I typed up elements of design I plan to explore: line, edge, motive, rhythm, hue, color, scale, balance, emphasis, contrast, space, movement, unity, texture, variety, hierarchy.

This was both a relief because there are a lot of options, a lot of things I could play with, with one chair, and a bit daunting. I comfort myself with knowing there are also a lot of media I can use. I plan to work with pencil, charcoal, graphite, watercolor, collage and words.

How quickly I expand, even with limits I choose.

Part of my journey will be sharing my process. Inviting, welcoming and sharing from where I am, while I am in it.

We are changed, have the power to change who we are and who we want to become. Creativity shows me this.
